FARM DAY August 30, 2009
Chef’s comments,  pictures, your comments!
Thank you for coming to our FARM DAY 2009.
We wanted to find a way, once a year, to connect all of us in this local food circle –farmers, chefs who use our products, farmer’s market customers, health food store managers, families who buys bulk beef every year, media people who continue to spread news for us, teachers who teach cooking and sustainable farming. You all really do care about local, sustainable food movement and it was such a pleasure to have you on our farm. Please know that without all of your daily, faithful support, our farm would not be here today, so again we thank you. Hopefully we will see you all next year.

Sincerely,
George and Eiko Vojkovich

P.S.  If  you have comments, suggestions & ideas for next year, please feel free to email us.  If you took some good  pictures, please email us as well, they will be posted as they come.

“ I try to help my student understand how their food choices impact the world around them”

"Farm Day was a great way to bring attention to sustainable farming techniques, enjoy the farm  and share ideas with  like-minded colleagues. Next year I’ll bring my whole family."

Farm Day 2009: We add caramelized walla walla onions to our burger mix to give them a bit sweeter and deeper flavor. We use Columbia city bakery buns, Samish Bay Gouda, and relish from Skagit valley so we like to think these are as local as they can be.

As a chef, it is my responsibility to support the local farmers.  It is my goal to ingrain that responsibility into everybody who comes on board so that when they move on they have that sense of awareness.  I don’t want them to look at food as something that comes out of a box."

"I thought the farm day was a fantastic forum for your customers and our guests to get together in one spot to learn more about how important your farm is and the commitment you put in day in and day out for them. Its was also good for them to hear from us, why we support the cause, and how it plays out in our businesses. I especially like the learning forum for the kids. "

“ I see myself as having an established role as a chef /restauranteur in Seattle and using that platform to help educate chefs and consumers nationally on how to sustain, heal, and cultivate our farmlands.  ( answer to a question asked at James Beard Award: “ where do you see yourself in five years ?  What do you hope to achieve?)

"It was so wonderful to spend time with our community on the farm. There isn't enough opportunities for farmers, farmer's market supporters, and chefs to share in a fun afternoon together while learning about sustainability straight from the horses mouth (or George's mouth. Sorry George, no harm intended :)"

"Dick and I wanted to thank you, George, Nicole and all of the Skagit River Ranch staff / helpers for such a great time on Sunday!
You were so incredibly well organized, and the Ranch and displays looked beautiful with all of the decorative touches. You were very creative with activities: Chicken Poop Bingo? What a fun idea! We enjoyed seeing the little kids having a grand time in the straw; the simplest things bring the greatest pleasure.
"The food, entertainment and panel discussion were all great. It was a perfect day for enjoying the fellowship of like-minded folks in a lovely setting. We appreciate the opportunity and all of the effort that went into creating such a special event. Your energy, dedication and passion are an inspiration! "I can't stop thinking about what a wonderful time we had at the ranch yesterday. I know how busy all of you are, and I just wanted to take a moment to thank you again for hosting such a fantastic event yesterday. As I sit here contemplating the gardens I need to design, the beans I need to pick and pickle and all my other work, I find my thoughts drifting back to the silty, blackberry lined path to the river beach. Truly, I could sit on a log with my feet in the river for hours just enjoying the beautiful space you call home. Thank you so very, very much."      Robin Haglund, CPH, Garden Mentors Inc, President
