About Our Products

Our ranch became “Certified Organic” in 1998. In order to pass the stringent requirements of Organic Standards set by the State Department of Agriculture we are required to meet and maintain these rigorous criteria:

  • No chemicals/pesticides/herbicides on the land or pastures at least 3 years prior to certification
  • No hormones, antibiotics or animal byproducts fed to the animals during their entire lives
  • Animals must be born, raised, and spend their entire lives on organic fields
  • If grains are fed, they must be certified organic. (Our non-ruminant animals, chicken and pigs, need grain for their health. We mill certified organic whole grains)

To be “certified organic”, both the land and the animals must meet certification requirements. We submit ourselves to third-party verification and go through USDA inspection every year to build customer confidence and trust.

Certified Organic Angus Beef

We raise about 150 certified organic,100% grass-fed beef each year for sale. They spend their entire lives on organic pastures, benefiting from rotational grazing on the freshest, most nutritious grasses and herbs. They receive a special mineral mix with sea salt and kelp - custom formulated for our local soils and climate - which helps keep their immune systems strong. The fat has a naturally creamy yellow color due to the high vitamin A & E content, and is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids and Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) – known anti-oxidants with cancer-fighting properties.

Our beef is harvested between May and December while the grass is still growing and full of nourishment. A USDA certified mobile processing unit comes to the farm, then transports the carcasses to a cut and wrap facility where they hang for a minimum of two weeks. The meat is quick frozen and kept in commercial cold storage at 0-5 degrees Fahrenheit to hold the freshness. Every package is vacuum sealed and is good for at least 2 years from the production date when kept frozen below 10 degrees.

As for taste, our beef took first prize in a nation-wide grass-fed taste test sponsored by “Pastured Perfect” author Jo Robinson in 2004. Judges evaluated flavor, tenderness, juiciness and texture, and Skagit River Ranch beef came out on top! (See Customer Comments) We believe that healthy, sweet grass, tender care, and the unique Skagit River Valley elements of soil, landscape and climate influence the quality of our beef in much the same way that wines take on a regional essence. Tasting is believing!

Certified Organic & Field Raised Pork

The pigs at Skagit River Ranch are raised outdoors where they root in the brush, dig in the sod, and cavort as only happy pigs can.  We mix their feed on site to assure the purity of fresh, whole organic grains, rich in flax seed, corn and wheat. We raise our pigs in our certified organic fields and pastures. Since we do not fallow all of our pigs, only a portion of our pigs are Certified Organic. We purchase some young piglets that are naturally and humanely raised and we finish growing them on our farm organically.  None of our piglets are given antibiotics or chemicals and are finished on certified organic grains only.  Our pigs are pampered. Period.

In addition to regular cuts of pork, we also make Italian sausage, breakfast sausage (mild and hot) and will cure ham and bacon on request.

Certified Organic Pasture-raised Chicken

Our broiler chickens are grown outdoors in movable pens where they can roam freely on green pastures in the fresh air. They eat grass and organic grain supplemented with flaxseed and sea kelp to help ensure they have plenty of vitamins and trace minerals.

These are exceptionally flavorful chickens that average 4-5 pounds. Many of our customers tell us they save the bones and scraps to make amazing soup stock.

Certified Organic Eggs

Unlike so called “free-range” chickens that are raised in confinement, our laying hens really live on pasture and eat grass, insects and organic grains as they roam in the green fields all day long.

Their eggs have bright orange yolks and firm whites – the quintessential “old fashioned” fresh egg loaded with healthy Omega 3’s, and vitamins A & E.
